    Water infrastructure sustainability (Green infrastructure, water-energy nexus, solids management, composting toilets, rainwater harvesting, constructed wetlands)
    Energy sustainability (Thin film solar cells)
    ...
    In our research we use modeling and analysis tools including life cycle assessment, carbon footprint analysis, geochemical modeling, fate and transport modeling, multi-criteria decision analysis, web based software design, uncertainty analysis, agent based modeling, and ecological design principles.
    Prior research: Road sustainability (Recycled materials, pollution from roads, road hydrology)

    Our lab receives funds to collaborate with Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Spain. Jay and Robert have been Skyping biweekly with Anna and Violeta to focus the topic of our collaboration and to plan their one month visit in Barcelon this summer.

    This course develops students' abilities to apply the principles of sustainability to engineered systems. Course topics include sustainability and sustainability engineering definition, life cycle engineering, green construction, ecological and whole system design theory, and energy and carbon footprint management. This course was taught face to face for several years. Starting in Spring 2015, it is being offered as an online course only.     Our research on water infrastructure sustainability focuses on economic and environmental evaluation of decentralized technologies including rainwater harvesting and composting toilets. We develop approaches and computer models for this purpose and have designed EEAST as a spreadsheet model for Economic and Environmental Analysis of Sanitation Technologies. We will be expanding on the concepts of EEAST by developing a more robust framework called uWISE.

    Economic and Environmental Analysis of Sanitation Technologies (EEAST) is an excel model developed for comparing water and sanitation systems of buildings such as standard toilets, composting toilets, high efficiency toilets and toilets that use harvest rainwater for flushing.
    June 20, 2012: We are working hard to release a new version of EEAST along with the launch of the EEAST website that will include a Prezi presentation and a YouTube tutorial on EEAST. Please check back in July when we anticipate these new developments will be available and posted here. For sneak peeks, here is the upcoming home of EEAST: www.eeast.wikispaces.com
    April 18, 2011: {EEAST Beta Version April 20 2011.xlsx} has many improvements compared to the first release. Some major improvement include results figures that are more user friendly and easier to interpret and an updated list of equations and references. Please contact defne.apul@utoledo.edu for any questions.
    July 2010: Beta Version July 2010 of the Economic and Environmental Analysis of Sanitation Technologies (EEAST) was released. This was the first version of EEAST and had poor results figures. EEAST was designed to compare rainwater harvesting, composting, and standard toilets in terms of their life cycle cost, energy, and emission impacts.
